Our new way of eating and looking at food and health has been such a spiritual journey for me. I was talking to a friend of mine about it the other day and as we were talking we came to a really cool conclusion and comparison to our lives as Christians. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!” How does this all go together? I’m so glad you asked!
If I’ve learned anything at all about this whole process it is that if I want to be truly successful I have to stay completely away from the foods that make me sick. If I cheat even once I get sick. If I start eating a lot of sugar, for example, I become addicted to it again and have a really hard time stopping eating it again. Not staying on my diet makes me feel terrible. I’m tired, worn down, grumpy, more emotional, etc. It’s absolutely amazing how what I eat affects me so much.
In the same way, when we become Christians we have to totally change and stay changed in Christ so our life goes as it should. If we live life out of order or not in the way God wants us to things just aren’t going to go as well. If we keep “eating” the things we know make us sick or don’t stay away from the sins that we struggle with (gossip, over-eating, porn, lying, etc) then it’s going to be so much harder to stop these sins.
I see, again, just how much God is a holistic God. Everything works together. He’s interested in our spiritual life and also interested in our physical life. If our physical and/or emotional lives aren’t going that great our spiritual life will be affected, and vice versa.
I encourage you to keep the OLD off and keep the NEW on. It only makes life that much better for us!
